The Hope-Action Theory

and Career Development

The Hope-Action Theory contains competencies that you can develop and incorporate into all aspects of your life, which includes career planning. When implementing career goals guided by the Hope-Action Theory, your clients (and you) will be able to make career decisions in a positive, confident, and hopeful manner.


Through the Certification in Hope-Action Theory & Practice, you will learn practical strategies from our internationally renowned instructors, that will help you generate and sustain hope. 

Hope fuels planning and our goal in this course is to not only fuel your planning, but to help you develop a plan to put hope into action.

What you can expect:

Weekly 2-hour live sessions will be scheduled based on the cohort's time zone

  • Pre Work: begin learning about the Hope-Action Theory, complete some introductory assignments and attend a live course introduction.

  • Course introduction: Learn about the course structure and expectations for certification. Meet your cohort, and connect with your small group.

  • Week 1: Debrief the Hope-Action Inventory, learn about mattering and navigating uncertainty. Practice identifying patterns and expanding awareness while simultaneously learning new strategies to support clients.

  • Week 2: Learn about paradoxical perspectives and possibility thinking while also reflecting on your own journey, considering the people who have impacted your career development, and how to support self-reflection in support of career development.

  • Week 3: Dive into metaphors! Learn a range of approaches to working with metaphors. Practice tuning in, hearing the metaphors around you, and using a variety of approaches to unleash the power of metaphors, expanding the ways you work with clients.

  • Week 4: Learn to take a values-based approach to work, exploring your personal style and how to support people who have different styles than your own. Learn to ask better questions, use mapping as a metaphor, and take a coaching approach to action planning.

  • Week 5: Learn about working with groups, and submit a final written evaluation for certification. Consider how you will apply what has been learned, looking ahead to the future, considering next steps and the importance of work-life balance.

  • Final Evaluation Due: Learners will complete a 2-part written final evaluation, reflecting on how they have grown throughout the course, as well as sharing a case study of the client they chose to work with for the duration of the course (applying approaches learned). Final evaluation is marked pass/fail.

Andrea Fruhling is a Certified Organizational Coach (UBC), founder of Doubleknot Works, executive director of the Hope-Action Group, and mentor coach/instructor for the Organizational Coaching program at the University of British Columbia, and an artist. Andrea develops and delivers engaging workshops and training programs for career practitioners and organizations all over the world, helping them find more creatively impactful ways to work with clients. She has led sessions and done keynote presentations for numerous national and international career development conferences and associations, and enjoys weaving together organizational and team coaching with career development to help people create and increase hopefulness in the world we live.

Dr. Norman Amundson

Norman Amundson is a professor emeritus from the University of British Columbia, and has worked in the career development field for over 40 years. During this time he has been involved in a number of national and international career development projects and has published many books and articles, including his award-winning book “Active Engagement”. In his work he emphasizes the importance of creativity, imagination, storytelling, dynamic action, metaphors and hope. Norm has presented his work at many national and international conferences in more than 30 countries. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Umea, in Sweden and has been recognized by many national and international professional associations for his leadership and contributions in the career development field. His workshops and presentations are practical, engaging and interactive.

Dr. Spencer Niles

Dr. Spencer Niles is a Professor in the Counselor Education Program at William & Mary, and previously served as Dean, at the School of Education at William & Mary. Spencer is one of the founders of the Hope-Action Theory and Hope-Action Inventory. He was a Distinguished Professor and Department Head at the Pennsylvania State University, and was twice the President of the National Career Development Association (NCDA), as well as being Past-President of Chi Sigma Iota International. Spencer ('Skip') is the recipient of the NCDA Eminent Career Award, and has been recognized with numerous awards from the American Counseling Association (ACA). He has taught in over 30 countries, and his book Career Development Interventions (6th edition) is the best-selling career text in the world.
